Samson

Samson is a male name, Hebrew origin meaning "Son of Service" or "Sun".

Samson currently ranks at number 882 for males on the Social Security Administration's Top 1000 Baby Names for 2009.

Nicknames: Sam, Sammy, Sonny

Sibling Names: Amos, Cyrus, Ephraim, Gideon, Esther, Judith, Miriam, Solomon

Variants: None

Samson packs a hefty wallop, but it condenses into short and sweet Sam. Parents wanting the nickname but not the popularity of hit Samuel may look at this, but Samson stands strong as a full name as well. There is the biblical connotation to overcome, but a strong man in the service of the Lord is not a bad one to honor your son with. And he will surely think the story of the jawbone is cool.

Nicodemus

Nicodemus is a male name, Greek origin meaning "Victory of the People".

Nicodemus has not appeared on the Social Security Administration's Top 1000 Baby Names for either gender in the last 100 years.

Nicknames: Nico, Nick, Nicky, Colin, Cole

Sibling Names: Bethany, Claudia, Stephen, Ethan, Gabriel, Sapphira, Susannah, Ezra

Variants: None

Nicodemus deals a heavy blow if used--it is unapologetically biblical, and quite a mouthful at that. But Biblical names have always been in style, and the more unique revivals--Azrael, Sapphira, Ezra, Moses--are garnering a lot of attention. Nicodemus has the benefit of sounding similar to friendly Nicholas, and sharing common nicknames, which may help it go down easier. A word of advice--if you are going to be particular, choose the nickname you prefer before the baby is born, because people WILL want to shorten it.

English actress Vivien Leigh and American actress Vivien Cardone both bear the name, giving it the silver-cinema sparkle, and French painter Joseph Vivien casts an artistic gleam to it. It has been unused for long enough that Vivien can start making impressions all on its own soon.

Raphaela

Nicknames: Rafe, Raffa, Ella, Ellie, Elle

Sibling Names: Giovanni, Donatella, Antonia, Marcus, Anthony, Christabella

Variants: Raffaella, Raphaella, Rafaela

Raphaela has all the elements to a surprise hit--it is uncommon, but recognizable; it shares a common style with mega hits Isabella, Gabriella, and Arianna; and converts into popular nicknames Ella, Ellie, or Elle. But parents have been shying away--possibly because of the hot headed ninja turtle, Raphael. But that pop culture image is fading fast, and Italian names are chic.

MOTW 15 Interesting Facts

I don't know how interesting any of this will be, but here goes!!

1. I super hate mayonnaise. It even repulses me to write the word--I check my sandwiches (even ones I made) between every bite to make sure there is NONE. If it were a person, I would stone-cold murder their as*.

2. I am southern Church of Christ by upbringing.

3. I have a tattoo of an orange Taurus bull on my left hip. I am not a Taurus--I am a Gemini--I just really really liked the bull, waited four years, and finally got it. The problem arouse that it is pretty pale against my skin, so during my c-sections the staff thought it was a rash both times, but my doctor made sure to keep it intact =)

4. I had c-sections both times I had my kids--complications due to gestational diabetes--and I don't regret it for a minute. Still one of the best decisions we ever made.

5. I became obsessed with baby names during my first pregnancy, but it exploded into a full blown addiction when my in-laws hurt my feelings so badly over Emerald's name.

6. I am damnably proud, which can cause problems for me and my family...

7. My husband and I have a 16 month old and an almost 3 year old, but we are still both going to college--he goes online year round and works, and I stay home and attend during the traditional school year.

8. My dad was diagnosed with Hep C and Cirrhosis of the liver when I was 11 or 12--most of my teenage life, I didn't see either of my parents more than once a week because Dad was in the hospital and mom worked from 5am till 9pm and spent the nights in the hospital with Dad. It was pretty much just us 4 kids until Dad got a transplant in 2001.

9. I didn't want to date Mike at first--I wanted to just be friends with benefits (read: make out buddy) so that I could focus on school. He pushed me into it.

10. Since I was a little girl, I have had a deep fascination and love for medicine--practicing reading on my mother's science text books, and anything I could get my hands on. I wanted to open an adolescent oncology ward and research center when I was grown up. I still desperately do, after volunteering some with Teens Living with Cancer (TLC).

11. I have had over the course of my lifetime: chickens, ducks, geese, horses, pony, sheep, goats, rabbits, cats, dogs, rat, guinea pig, and parakeets, all while living on a half acre.

12. I only moved once with my family growing up--from one house, to the one next door. Michael on the other hand moved no less than 8 major times, and that doesn't count from one home to another in the same city.

13. We recently discovered that I probably have a hyper-sensitivity to tomatoes and can't eat them any more...which sucks because two of the staples down here (BBQ and Mexican) utilize tomatoes a LOT.

14. My husband and I are learning how to cook together--hurrah!!

15. Finally, my favorite bands are Queen, ZZTop, Led Zeppelin, Fall Out Boy, and Alabama =)

MOTW Bio

There isn't really much to tell about me to be honest.

I was born the youngest of four--I have an older sister and two older brothers, and we go 23, 24, 25, 26. My parents had their hands quite full. Mom stayed at home with us until I was 4, and then she went to college and got her degree in Microbiology. She works as a med tech now. My dad worked as a mechanic most of my life, or as supervisor at any rate.

My hometown was very small, very close knit--most of the kids that went to kindergarten with me also graduated with me. I was in the marching and symphonic bands--bass trombone. We won state marching competition, which was pretty cool. I also did yearbook and the school newspaper, literary criticism, and was almost embarrassingly active in church youth group (I was at the building 5-6 days out of the week).

After high school, I went to Lubbock Christian University--there, I met Michael. He is some kind of wonderful. We had our beautiful daughter Emerald after nearly two years of dating, and got married a few months later. It was a lovely wedding--fall jewel colors, theme of "happily ever after". When Emerald was 17 months old, we had Gabriel. They are neat kids.

After Emerald was born, I changed my major from Biology to Business, which I found a great deal less stressful. I am still going nearly three years later--bleg. Michael and I are still very happy--he's my bestie best. I think that's all!!
