30 Day Song Challenge: Day 7

Day 7: A Song that Reminds You of an Event

"How Far We've Come" by Matchbox Twenty

This song reminds me of my pregnancy with Emerald, her birth, and nursing her in the months that followed.

I was unable to sleep most nights when I was pregnant because I was uncomfortable, too hot, couldn't find a position to sleep in that I was comfortable in... and, oh yeah--I was scared out of my mind. Of how I was going to get this child out of me, how I was going to be a terrible mother, about how I was going to raise this thing.

During those long sleepless nights of my pregnancy, this song aired every night, and it made me cry every time because I felt it was describing my veering off my selected life path of becoming a doctor, and it was heartbreaking to me.

During the c-section, the radio was playing and my little girl came into the world while it played in the background, and I finally felt I had accomplished something--it was speaking of the end of my pregnancy, the nine month journey.

Then, again during the long sleepless nights of staying awake to nurse every few hours, I thought about how the song was talking about my life in all the little events that led up to where I was, who I was becoming, and where I was going. And I liked what i saw...I was happy with it.

All in all, I haves spent a great deal of time thinking and reflecting on this song, and so it will stick out to me for a long time =)

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 6

Day 6: A Song That Reminds You of Somewhere

"Carried Away" by George Strait

Silly that this should always remind me of this particular memory but....

My favorite place on earth is Camp Deer Run. One year, on Sadie Hawkin's night at canteen, my date Brian and Amber's date Chris (and their friend) sang this song to one of the counselors. Ever since then, it makes me think of sticky sweet root beer, muggy warm East Texas nights, and one of the cutest boys I have ever seen.

Great song =)

Lyrics:
I don't take my whiskey to extremes
Don't believe in chasin' crazy dreams
My feet are planted firmly on the ground
But darlin' when you come around

I get carried away by the look by the light in your eyes
Before I even realize the ride I'm on baby I'm long gone
I get carried away nothin' matters but bein' with you
Like a feather flyin' high up in the sky on a windy day, I get carried away.

It might seem like an ordinary night
Same ol' stars, the same ol' moon up high
But when I see you standin' at your door
Nothin's ordinary anymore.

I get carried away by the look by the light in your eyes
Before I even realize the ride I'm on baby I'm long gone
I get carried away nothin' matters but bein' with you
Like a feather flyin' high up in the sky on a windy day, I get carried away.

I get carried away by the look by the light in your eyes
Before I even realize the ride I'm on baby I'm long gone
I get carried away nothin' matters but bein' with you
Like a feather flyin' high up in the sky on a windy day, I get carried away.
Carried away

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 5

Day 5: A Song That Reminds You of Someone

"Happy to Be Stuck With You", Huey Lewis and the News

This one is hard, because I actually assign songs to people. This particular ditty is mine and Michael's song, and it can't help but make me smile.

Other mentionable songs assigned to people:

Emerald is "Crazy for this Girl" by Evan and Jaron
Gabriel is "You Are My Sunshine"
Mom, "Country Bumpkin" by Conway Twitty
Dad, "Shine" by Collective Soul
Amber, "Strawberry Wine" by Deana Carter (and I know, totally gay. But we used to sing this ALL the time together)

It goes on from there. Pretty much every person I know has some song or another linked to them. It's how I roll. Still looking for the right song for Benji, but I am thinking "You'll Be in My Heart" by Phil Collins.

Moving on...Lyrics:
We've had some fun, and yes we've had our ups and downs
Been down that rocky road, but here we are, still around
We thought about someone else, but neither one took the bait
We thought about breaking up, but now we know it's much too late
We are bound by all the rest
Like the same phone number
All the same friends
And the same address

Yes, it's true, (yes it's true) I am happy to be stuck with you
Yes, it's true, (yes it's true) I'm so happy to be stuck with you
'Cause I can see, (I can see) that you're happy to be stuck with me

We've had our doubts, we never took them seriously
And we've had our ins and outs, but that's the way it's supposed to be
We thought about giving up, but we could never stay away
Thought about breaking up, but now we know it's much too late
And it's no great mystery
If we change our minds
Eventually, it's back to you and me

Yes, it's true, (yes it's true) I am happy to be stuck with you
Yes, it's true, (yes it's true) I'm so happy to be stuck with you
'Cause I can see, (I can see) that you're happy to be stuck with me

We are bound by all the rest
Like the same phone number
All the same friends
And the same address

Yes, it's true, (yes it's true) I am happy to be stuck with you
Yes, it's true, (yes it's true) I'm so happy to be stuck with you
'Cause I can see, (I can see) that you're happy to be stuck with me
Yes it's true (yes it's true) I'm so happy to be stuck with you
I'm happy to be stuck with you
Happy to be stuck with you.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 4

Day 4 of the song Challenge is....A Song That Makes You Sad

"Homesick" by Mercy Me

This was actually one of the toughest songs for me to decide on. There are so many songs that make me cry every single damned time they come on...notable mentions go to:

"The Little Girl" and "Letters from Home" from John Michael 'Fuck You' Montgomery
"How to Save a Life" by The Fray
and "A Bad Dream" by Keane

The reason "Homesick" came out front of the pack is because it makes me cry on so many different levels. It makes me miss my great-grandmother, who's funeral this song was played at her funeral; it makes me miss how involved I used to be in the church, and how aimless and unfulfilled I have felt since I never got anything that could take its place; because I miss my home and my family and my siblings and 8 hours seem so very very far; and as stupid and as lame as it sounds, because I never listen to it when Michael is around (he wouldn't like it, I don't think), and even though I live with the jerk, we rarely get any time together, and it is a physical ache that I just some days can't fight. I miss him. It's gay, whatever.

Anyways, lyrics:
You're in a better place, I've heard a thousand times
And at least a thousand times I've rejoiced for you
But the reason why I'm broken, the reason why I cry
Is how long must I wait to be with you

I close my eyes and I see your face
If home's where my heart is then I'm out of place
Lord, won't you give me strength to make it through somehow
I've never been more homesick than now

Help me Lord cause I don't understand your ways
The reason why I wonder if I'll ever know
But, even if you showed me, the hurt would be the same
Cause I'm still here so far away from home

I close my eyes and I see your face
If home's where my heart is then I'm out of place
Lord, won't you give me strength to make it through somehow
I've never been more homesick than now

In Christ, there are no goodbye
And in Christ, there is no end
So I'll hold onto Jesus with all that I have
To see you again
To see you again

And I close my eyes and I see your face
If home's where my heart is then I'm out of place
Lord, won't you give me strength to make it through somehow
Won't you give me strength to make it through somehow
Won't you give me strength to make it through somehow

I've never been more homesick than now

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 3

Day 3 of the Challenge: A Song that Makes You Happy

"Beautiful" by Akon

Akon is totally normally my thing (so untrue--I love Akon. Don't judge me). But while I am in school, every day I put this song on while I get ready and dance all over the place...it just makes me happy. It makes me feel good about myself, gets my heartbeat up and energizes me, gets me pumped for the day. Plus, it makes my hips happy which is fun; I would love to be a dancer, but I am SUPER not a dancer.

Lyrics:
When I see you
I run out of words to say (oh oh)
I wouldn't leave you
'Cause you're that type of girl to make me stay (oh oh)

I see the guys tryna' holla
Girl I don't wanna bother you
'Cause you're independent and you got my attention
Can I be your baby father
Girl I just wanna show you
That I love what you are doin' hun

I see you in the club
You gettin' down good
I wanna get with you, yeah
I see you in the club

High from your high heel game
High heels push up ya ass last name
And you livin' in the fast lane
Eyes like an angel (goddess)
Watch my yellin' as she undress
Spotless (otless) bad to the bone
Make me wanna go put me in the triple X zone (zone)
Lames don't know how to talk to you
So let me walk with you, hold my hand
I'mma spend them grands, but after you undress
Not like a hooker, but more like a princess
Queen, empress, president
Pull any way ya got my love
'Cause your beautiful (okay??)

You gettin' down good
I wanna get with you (ohh yeah)
I see you in the club

So damn beautiful
Said you're so beautiful (so beautiful)

[Colby O'Donis]
I never wanna see you cry cry cry (don't cry)

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 2

Continuing from the last post,

Day 2: Your Least Favorite Song

Props to a legend, and I love so many, many of his songs so I feel really horrible for saying this...I cannot freaking stand "I've Been Everywhere" by Johnny Cash.

I mean, it is literally the most grating, obnoxious song I can imagine, and every time I hear it, it sets my teeth on edge and makes me just want to break something. What's worse? People love to listen to it in the car, including my very much loved (but woefully tone deaf) grandfather.

This, and every subsequent remake, has chipped away at my patience and my soul until there is nothing left but the very strong desire to never travel again.

Lyrics:
I was totin' my pack along the long dusty Winnemucca road,
When along came a semi with a high an' canvas-covered load.
"If you're goin' to Winnemucca, Mack, with me you can ride."
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"

[Chorus:]
I've been everywhere, man.
I've been everywhere, man.
Crossed the desert's bare, man.
I've breathed the mountain air, man.
Of travel I've had my share, man.
I've been everywhere.

I've been to:
Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma,
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo,
Tocapillo, Baranquilla, and Perdilla, I'm a killer.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,
Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana,
Monterey, Faraday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa,
Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa,
Tennessee, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete's sake.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Louisville, Nashville, Knoxville, Ombabika,
Schefferville, Jacksonville, Waterville, Costa Rica,
Pittsfield, Springfield, Bakersfield, Shreveport,
Hackensack, Cadillac, Fond du Lac, Davenport,
Idaho, Jellico, Argentina, Diamantina,
Pasadena, Catalina, see what I mean-a.

[Chorus]

I've been to:
Pittsburgh, Parkersburg, Gravelbourg, Colorado,
Ellensburg, Rexburg, Vicksburg, Eldorado,
Larimore, Admore, Haverstraw, Chatanika,
Chaska, Nebraska, Alaska, Opelika,
Baraboo, Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City,
Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity.

[Chorus]

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 1

On Facebook, a lot of people are doing the "30 Day Song Challenge", including me. Since I do not want to lose it after I have done it and because I think this would be a good, fun thing to look back on.

So you know: Probably won't stretch it out over 30 days. Will probably do them bam, bam, bam right in a row. Cuz that's how I roll.

Day 1: Your Favorite Song

Gun to my head (though why anyone would be holding a gun to my head demanding that I tell them my favorite song...anyways, back to the point....) Gun to my head, I will tell you every time that my most favorite song is "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls.

As way of explanation, I am a hopeless romantic that was 11 years old when that song (and the movie, "City of Angels", it is associated with) came out. But I like songs that make me feel, that make me react. And this song has always, after 13 years of being my favorite song, has always taken my breath away. Does that make me a total girl? Oh, heck yeah. But hey--news flash...kinda AM a girl, ya know?

Lyrics:
Verse 1

And I'd give up forever to touch you
Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
Verse 2

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
Cause sooner or later it's over
I just don't want to miss you tonight
Chorus

And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
Verse 3

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything seems like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know your alive

Chorus

And I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
Chorus

I don't want the world to see me
Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
